Pompeu Fabra University (Catalan: Universitat Pompeu Fabra, pronounced [uniβəɾsiˈtat pumˈpɛw ˈfaβɾə]; UPF) is a public university in Barcelona, Spain. The Universitat Pompeu Fabra is a highly regarded Catalan and Spanish university, created by the Autonomous Government of Catalonia in 1990, named after the linguist Pompeu Fabra, an expert on the Catalan language, credited with standardising this once-disused language and revising it, giving it the status it holds today.
It was designated as an “International Excellence Campus” by the Spanish Ministry of Education in 2010. The university is a modern institution based on the model of the high-powered American research university with controlled admissions and an emphasis on rigorous instruction and research.
An internationally renowned institution, UPF has recently been rated as the top Spanish university by the (London) Times Higher Education Supplement, and it is firmly in the upper echelon of Spanish universities in other rating schemes. Academically, it is the only Spanish and Catalan university along with the Autonomous University of Barcelona among the top 150 best in the world according to Times Higher Education academic classification of universities (140th and 147th place respectively) and it is one of the 7 fastest-rising young universities in the world, according to the same ranking. It ranks first in the national ranking of scientific productivity since 2009.
The university has begun to figure prominently in many international rankings. Its studies on the Economics field have been ranked among the top 50 worldwide, 23rd for Economics and Econometrics in the QS World University Rankings by Subject and 40th for Business & Economics in the Times Higher Education Rankings.
The university's Faculty of Economics and Business Sciences is the first and only faculty in Spain (public or private and for any discipline) to be awarded the Certificate for Quality in Internationalization granted by a consortium of 14 European accreditation agencies.
In 2010, the university was awarded as Campus of International Excellence.
UPF offers its studies around three areas of knowledge: the social sciences and humanities, the health and life sciences, and the ICT and communication sciences.
Teaching is organized in seven colleges: Humanities, Health and Life Sciences, Economics, Political and Social Sciences, Communication, Law, Translation and Interpretation as well as one polytechnic school focused on engineering and ICT.
Research is organized in eight departments: Economics and Business, Law, Political and Social Sciences, Humanities, Experimental Sciences and Health, ICT, Communication and Translation & Language Sciences.
The University also has five affiliated centers (UPF Barcelona School of Management, International Trade Business School -ESCI-, Elisava School of Design, Tecnocampus and Mar University School of Nursing -ESIM) and partnerships in different inter-university postgraduate platforms such as the Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals -IBEI- or the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics -Barcelona GSE-).
In order to promote research and transfer activities undertaken by university researchers and provide them with greater international visibility, the University is developing the UPF Research Park in the fields of social sciences, humanities, communication and information technologies. The UPF Research Park, which develops its activity at Ciutadella and Poblenou campuses, coordinates its activities in the fields of health and life sciences with the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), located at Mar campus.
UPF has also been participating in a set of institutions and centers specializing in teaching, research and transfer that have their own legal personality and which comprise the UPF Group, and which often exist in collaboration with other institutions and universities. Thus, in the field of research and transfer, plus the three science parks include the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM) - Hospital del Mar, Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE) (CSIC-UPF), the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) or the Research Centre for International Economics (CREI).
Enric Argullol served as rector from the founding until June 2001, followed by M. Rosa Virós i Galtier (2001-2005) and Josep Joan Moreso (2005-2013). The current rector, Jaume Casals, was reelected for a second term in April 2017.
The UPF is located in three separate campuses, each associated to its own area of knowledge:
- Social Sciences and Humanities (Ciutadella Campus)
- ITC and communication sciences (Poblenou Campus)
- Health and Life Sciences (Mar Campus)
The position of UPF is presented in the following international rankings: Times Higher Education (THE), Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the one published by Shanghai University (ARWU), U-Multirank (promoted by the EU), and the Leiden ranking, which is focused on research. More information on rankings (global position and results by subjects) can be found at UPF website.
