There is one shop, one church and one community centre. Three mildly residentially segregated communities exist within this settlement; these regions are locally referred to as the Back-Lanes, the New Houses and the Park. The Back-Lanes run parallel to Penrhiwfer road, spanning 0.2 miles, located to the South East of the Site. The New Houses is predominantly a council housing development and is located at the north west extreme of the village. The Park is adjacent to the church and (the now closed) community centre and to the immediate north of the new school. It is in the community of Penygraig.
Penrhiwfer lies in the Tonyrefail West ward of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, is a ward of Tonyrefail & District Community Council.
As of 4 May 2017 its County Councillor is Alexandra Davies-Jones, and its Community Councillors are Daniel Owen-Jones, and Andrew Davies-Jones.
