Lewis Hamilton is a British racing driver and seven-time Formula One world champion. He entered Formula One in 2007 with McLaren, with whom he won 21 Grands Prix, before moving to Mercedes in 2013 where, to date, he has won 74 races. His total of 95 wins is the record for the most Grand Prix victories in Formula One.[1] Hamilton has also won at least one race in each of his 14 consecutive seasons contested,[2] attracting high praise from fellow drivers for extracting race-winning performances from cars that were not dominant.[3][4]
Hamilton's first win came in his debut season, in 2007, at the Canadian Grand Prix, from his first pole position;[5] he won a further 3 races that season. Hamilton won 5 races en route to winning his first world title in 2008, including a dominant win in the rain-affected British Grand Prix[6] where he won by over a minute, the largest margin of victory recorded since the 1995 Australian Grand Prix.[7] In his remaining seasons with McLaren, Hamilton recorded a further 12 wins, achieving 2 in 2009, 3 in both 2010 and 2011, and 4 in 2012.[8][9][10][11] Hamilton won his first race for Mercedes in 2013 at the Hungarian Grand Prix. He took his second world title in 2014 with 11 race wins.[12] Hamilton won 10 races in 2015, including victory at the United States Grand Prix where he clinched his third world title with three races remaining.[13] He won 10 races as runner-up to Nico Rosberg in the 2016 championship, setting a new record for the most wins in a season without winning the World Championship.[14] Hamilton achieved 9 wins in 2017 and 11 wins in 2018, 2019 and 2020 as he won his fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh World Championship titles consecutively.[15][16][17]
Hamilton holds the record for most wins at different Grands Prix (28) and most wins at different circuits (29).[18] Taking victory at the Hungaroring eight times, he holds the record for most wins at the same Grand Prix and most wins at the same circuit. Hamilton's largest margin of victory was at the 2008 British Grand Prix, while the smallest margin was at the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where he won by 0.439 seconds as he slowed down in an unsuccessful attempt to allow other drivers to catch and pass Rosberg in one last attempt to win that year's title.[19]
